The concept of this website is intuitive and straightforward: you will be able to create a profile where you tell which instruments you play, which music genre, groups you follow.
And the website just helps you match your interests with those of other people around you. Are you new in a city and you would like to meet new people? It’s time to sign-up to Tastebuds. No big deal during the free registration process. An effortless profile creation will soon follow, and everything will be set up!
No techy skills needed: think of Tastebuds as a regular social network, with the dating feature, which is indeed a big plus if you would like to meet new people.
Go for the tab “sign-in with Facebook,” if you own a Facebook account, and you don’t mind having the two profiles related. Tastebuds will not publish anything without your consent, so you can sign up through your FB account without worrying about your security.
If you don’t want to, or if you don’t have a Facebook account because you despise social networks or youngsters now go for Snapchat, here’s what you can do: use your e-mail!
Either way, you will be asked to tell them your birthday, age, and who you may be interested in: women or men. Now, you should choose a profile picture or a “skip” button. And finally, the unique Tastebuds feature is the music taste selection.
As this latter will be fixed within your profile, we will discuss it in another paragraph. Read on!
Once you click a profile, they will ask you directly who you like, among the most popular artists. After you have selected who you would like to meet – a date, a soul mate, a concert buddy, friends – an interactive page will display right in front of your eyes. They will start from the classics, so prepare to answer the oldest debate in history: Beatles or Rolling Stones? We have selected both, so we assure you there’s no discrimination.
You can browse artists and select them yourself. They probably take artists from their personal database. We tried with niche music from the US, then with music from other countries in the world.
Quite disappointing as we were not able to find either. Sigur Ròs are there, but ABBA is not! Stone Temple Pilots are in, but we could not see Sixto Rodriguez. Therefore, prepare yourself for a disappointment, if you are more into indie music, or are a rock traditionalist with a lot of friends playing in bands around your city: their bands are banned.
You can’t add a group that is not there, and that’s a significant setback, too.
How are you supposed to find like-minded people, if you can only find mainstream UK music, here? We know that this is a London-based website, after all. But it’s a little local if you have a global musical taste.
If you are going to edit your profile on the way, you can do that from the profile section on the main toolbar’s top right. You can add your ethnicity, religious and cultural background, body type, and so on. Let other people find you, thanks to the browser!
Once you have set your musical taste, the website will automatically suggest you nearby people who have your own musical taste. What happens is that you only find people with a common ground with you, but not necessarily nearby people.
The issue is that if no people like the same music you like nearby, you will be shown far away. It is not bad if you are used to common transport systems, like cars, airplanes, and trains. Still, if you are a busy person and can’t travel that much, that’s not the shortest way to find a match.
Let’s take a look at the communication options:
You need to be at least 18 to register on Tastebuds, so there are no under-aged people. An overall look may lead you to a conclusion: everyone here looks like a decent person.
Pick up your doubts and throw them away, a yes, almost everyone on Tastebuds is here to find a music buddy. You will hardly meet scammers or fakers here.
The website rules are very clear about nudity, violence, hatred, bigotry—they even claim that if you are married and are here to find an affair, you are not welcome! So yes, music is on the main course, and you can get this by a look at the online members.
About the online activities, we have already mentioned the chat and chat room section. We recommend using the gear on the top left of the screen to narrow your search of a buddy nearby. It will help you choose the right person for the right mission, so to say.
You can also use the tabs on the right of the screen, where you can select members by “top buds,” “music matches,” “last online,” and “newest.”
What can you do with other members? Here’s what you can do online: say, “I like you,” send a song, text.
Then, write comments within the comment section and the “shoutbox” at the bottom of the page.
Let’s take a closer look at the audience.
The average user’s age spans from 20 to 35 years old. It’s quite hard to find an over 40 user, we suppose because they already have tastebuds, or because they do not know the app, do not trust a digital-friendly environmenе. Who knows why? We will skip the sociological analysis, and move on to the sexual preference!
Talking about sexual preferences, the vast majority of people here is straight. But the site accepts people with different sexual orientations, and you do not need to worry about sexual preferences.
Caucasian is the primary ethnicity. Given that the website is mostly based in Europe, we can understand that. Switching to the US version may make more ethnicities may pop-out.
We admit we have not tried with every single country in the world, so it’s up to you now to test this, and maybe to let us know, eventually! We wish we could update this review with your comments.
There’s no room for religious debates here on Tastebuds. You can register on this site despite your religious preferences, and even if you are looking for like-minded people, you might find someone here.
We have already talked about the main ones, but now it’s time to list them and give you a broader picture.
You can sign up and create a profile for free on Tastebuds. Within the profile, you can select music bands and single singers or players, and show them like banners. You can add your ethnicity, body type, sexual preference, and many other features. You can perform searches based on those fields you have filled, and the website will show you only like-minded people.
You can chat with them, put “like” under their profiles, share songs with them, and you can partake in discussions in chat rooms (see the “more” tab? Take a look at what’s included there). Also, you can select why you are here. Are you here to find a concert? Or just to share musical views? Or, finally, to get a friend/date and so on? That’s it.
Tastebuds values security online very much. If you read through the Terms and conditions, you will find quite strict behavioral rules, which are meant to enhance user experience online, and avoid unpleasant misunderstandings.
Being kind is a must for someone, while for somebody else, it’s just a plus. But being polite is what you will need if you would like to stay here. You can easily report a user who’s being annoying or pushy, for example.
If you take care of yourself within your exchanges with other users, everything should be just fine.
Quite an awkward question, considering what we have said so far. Still, tons of users ask us every day whether an online service is a scam.
We don’t think Tastebuds as a scam at all. The service is legit. If you think that it’s not worth the bill, you can not subscribe or pay, and then unsubscribe. There are no hidden fees, no unknown features you won’t be able to use, and no related bugs within the website. The people online are real, and you will also know by their profiles the last time they were online. So, it is totally legit.
See the profile icon within the main toolbar? Click on it and go for “go backstage” in the dropdown menu. This page helps you see the three packages you can avail of.
Paying for a subscription is not what young people do, and we can understand that a free tool might be the first choice for a person.
Still, the two Tastebuds’ developers need to make a living out of it. As they invested so much time in a project which makes a lot of people happy, we should at least pay them a little subscription. You are not just paying for nothing! You will get extra features, indeed. Let’s see them more into detail.
A free membership allows you to get in. You can sign-up, create, and edit your own profile, change your music taste, browse music groups, etc. You can be targeted with automatic matches that the website is creating for you, overlapping music and location.
What about messages? Try yourself with a random person’s profile: you click on it, you see his/her fantastic music taste, the profile picture, the personal description. Then, on the top right of the screen, the “send a song” and “message” button. If you click on the “message,” the screen will disappear. It will be annoying you, and eventually, you will go for a paid subscription. Why losing your time in research like that, if you can’t even message to people?
It starts at one month/€10, three months for €6,66 each month, six months for €5 each. The prices are expressed in pounds, euros, but they are also available in dollars. It depends on the IP you are connecting from and the country you are paying from. Your credit card should not apply fees for the currency conversion, this way.
Those are the prices, quite low if compared to the Rolling Stone’s concerts, or other dating and hookup websites’ subscriptions.
They are meant to let you save money for the next Tomorrowland, that’s why they stay low.
Availing of the membership will let you send and receive unlimited messages, hide your online status, visit profiles anonymously, and remove ads. We found ads not annoying at all, and we can’t tell why a person should be creating a social profile for browsing other users anonymously. Still, those features are very much required by users!
People who love the place will pay for it. They will meet and become concert buddies, and eventually, they may stop paying for the Tastebuds’ membership. That’s the circle of life, so consider the subscription as a starting point.
The design is modern and highly usable. You won’t lose yourself within Tastebuds, that’s for sure.
There is no mobile app for Android. Don’t be deceived by that “Tastebuds,” it’s a different app concerning food and wine experiences. There’s an IOS app, though, and the website is mobile-friendly enough to let you use it on the go.
